A plan people can actually use

Keep the link between direction, responsibility and action visible.

Set a clear direction

Describe the change you want in language the team can recognise.

Make the decision, the people involved and the boundaries of the work explicit. A focused question gives the engagement a useful centre.

Describe the choice, transition or challenge that prompted the conversation. Capture the context in your own words before deciding what further information would be useful.

Clarify ownership

Every next step needs a person who can carry it forward and a clear understanding of dependencies.

Consider options against the same priorities and constraints. Describe the assumptions behind each direction so they can be tested.

Explain who owns the decision and which teams will help shape or implement it. Capture the context in your own words before deciding what further information would be useful.

Return to the plan

A useful plan changes as the team learns. Create a regular opportunity to review what has become clearer.

Connect the discussion to a usable handover. Agree responsibilities, outstanding questions and the next opportunity to review progress.

Share the timing, known dependencies and information that can be discussed in an initial call. Capture the context in your own words before deciding what further information would be useful.

Bring the considerations together

These starting points help us frame an engagement around the decision, rather than an off-the-shelf programme.

A difficult business decision rarely arrives as a neatly defined problem. Different teams see different priorities, and the information available may be incomplete. A useful advisory conversation begins by making the decision clearer: what needs to change, what is within scope and who needs to be part of it.

A useful next conversation

We define the question, its boundaries and the people who need to contribute before recommending an engagement.

The work should explain the decisions made, the questions still open and the practical responsibilities for moving forward.

  • Start with the decision
  • Work in the open
  • Leave a usable handover
